Trump demands 1% or lower interest rate after first Fed hike since 2023
Trump said rates in the United States should be 1% or less and urged the Federal Reserve to cut them fast after its first hike since 2023.
On Wednesday, President Donald Trump demanded the Federal Reserve slash interest rates to 1% "or less," hours after the central bank announced its first rate hike since 2023.
The Federal Reserve announced the rate hike to combat rising inflation driven by the war in Iran, marking the first such increase in over three years.
Trump argued on Truth Social that rates should be 1% because the United States is the "Best Credit in the World," claiming stopping trade with deficit nations would generate $1.5 Trillion Dollars annually.
Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh, nominated by Trump this year, refused to discuss private conversations with the president when addressing reporters after the announcement.
Trump insisted the Federal Reserve "LOWER THE INTEREST RATES FOR THE UNITED STATES" quickly, asserting the nation is "carrying" almost every country in the world and this arrangement cannot continue.
