Trump Says He'll Award Fireballer Roger Clemens the Presidential Medal of Freedom
Trump said Clemens deserves the nation’s highest civilian honor despite Hall of Fame rejection over steroid allegations.
President Donald Trump announced Wednesday at a San Antonio rally he will award the Presidential Medal of Freedom to former Major League Baseball star Roger Clemens, calling the seven-time Cy Young Award winner 'maybe the greatest pitcher of all time.'
Despite a 24-year career featuring 354 wins and 4,672 strikeouts, Clemens failed to receive enough votes for the Baseball Hall of Fame following his 2007 mention in the Mitchell Report regarding steroid use.
Trump claimed the Baseball Hall of Fame 'cheated' the pitcher, comparing his advocacy for Clemens to his previous push for Pete Rose, who received a posthumous federal pardon last year.
Clemens, who introduced Trump at the event, told supporters the honor 'supersedes anything that obviously I've done in my playing career,' adding he was honored to receive the award in his home state of Texas.
This award follows the president's previous recognitions of other athletes, including golfer Tiger Woods and former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach, continuing a pattern of honoring sports figures with the nation's highest civilian award.
