FAIRFAX COUNTY, VIRGINIA, JUL 23 – The Justice Department is investigating possible discriminatory practices in admissions, scholarships, hiring, and antisemitism response at George Mason University amid four probes this month.
- On Monday, the U.S. Department of Justice opened a civil rights investigation into George Mason University’s admissions, scholarships and antisemitism response in Fairfax County.
- This fourth federal probe is the latest in a series targeting George Mason University amid the Trump administration’s DEI crackdown, following last week’s inquiry into discrimination.
- Opened under Section 707 of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, the probe will assess Title VI claims in admissions and scholarships and could lead to federal court proceedings.
- In response, George Mason University rejected the claims, stating it continues to comply with federal and state mandates, and Gregory Washington said the school always operates with a commitment to equality under the law.
- This move fits into a broader campaign targeting campus DEI and pro-Palestinian protests, and Rep. Bobby Scott called the investigations `troubling`.
