Trump administration releases $6 billion in school grants after freeze
UNITED STATES, JUL 26 – The Education Department will begin dispersing $5 billion in grants for adult literacy, English instruction, and after-school programs after a month-long funding freeze under review.
- On Friday, the U.S. Department of Education announced it would release $6.8 billion in grants held since June 30, marking the end of a month-long pause.
- In early July, over $6 billion was withheld in a funding freeze aimed at enforcing White House priorities, which was challenged in court by two dozen states.
- Last week, $1.3 billion of the frozen funds was released, and Madi Biedermann said disbursement to states begins next week.
- Some GOP lawmakers praised the move, and Democrats said the freeze was unwarranted, with Sen. Lisa Murkowski calling it a win.
- On August 2, lawmakers will meet to address education budgets, even as the following school year could see deep cuts in federal allocations, raising concerns about future funding debates.
