Interior Department Approves Modifying Federal Coal Mining Project in Montana
- The Department of the Interior approved on Friday the expansion of Montana's Bull Mountains coal mine operated by Signal Peak Energy under a national energy emergency.
- This approval follows President Trump's January 20 declaration of a national energy emergency aimed at accelerating fossil fuel production despite previous legal challenges.
- The expansion will unlock close to 60 million tons of coal, primarily exported to Japan and South Korea, and is projected to prolong the mine’s operation by as much as nine years.
