Trump administration shuts down LGBTQ youth suicide hotline
UNITED STATES, JUL 17 – The Trump administration ended the specialized LGBTQ+ support on the 988 Lifeline after spending $33 million, shifting to a unified service model for all callers, advocates warn of increased risks.
- On July 17, 2025, the Trump administration ended the 988 Lifeline’s “Press 3 option,” which ran for three years under federal funding.
- The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline initially introduced in 2022, with a specialized LGBTQ+ youth subnetwork, funded by a $29.7 million Congressional directive for fiscal year 2023.
- Government data show demand for the specialized service grew from 2,000 monthly contacts in September 2022 to nearly 70,000 last month, serving about 1.5 million people, according to the Trevor Project website.
