US Designates Four European Groups as Terrorist Organizations
The U.S. plans to designate four European Antifa groups as Foreign Terrorist Organizations, blocking their assets and banning material support due to violent anarchist attacks, officials said.
- On Thursday, the U.S. State Department announced it will designate four European antifa-linked groups as Foreign Terrorist Organizations and Specially Designated Global Terrorists, effective next week.
- Antifa Ost in Germany, the Informal Anarchist Federation/International Revolutionary Front in Italy, and two Greece-based groups—Armed Proletarian Justice and Revolutionary Class Self-Defense—were designated, the State Department said.
- State Department fact sheet cited explosive, shooting, and assault attacks targeting civilians, law enforcement, and government facilities by all four groups, including IEDs claimed by Revolutionary Class Self-Defense and a bomb planted by Armed Proletarian Justice.
- As a legal effect, U.S. assets will be frozen, Americans are prohibited from providing support, and the State Department said persons engaging with the groups face sanctions risk.
- Some national security experts cautioned the designation is legally questionable because Antifa lacks clear leadership, while officials framed the move as part of a broader campaign to confront Antifa's political violence.
