Trump administration announces drug pricing deals with Teva, Astellas and others
The agreements extend lower Medicaid drug prices to 26 companies and are projected to save Americans more than $600 billion over a decade, officials said.
- On Monday, President Donald Trump announced voluntary 'most-favored-nation' pricing agreements with nine mid-sized pharmaceutical firms, expanding the program to 26 manufacturers covering 90% of the domestic branded drug market.
- Trump launched the MFN policy via a May 12, 2025, executive order to align U.S. drug costs with international prices, crediting his 'America First' trade policy for compelling companies to invest in domestic production.
- These nine companies committed to invest at least $19.6 billion in U.S. manufacturing, while four firms agreed to donate 290 metric tons of active pharmaceutical ingredients to a federal strategic reserve to reduce foreign supply reliance.
- The administration projects the deals will save Americans more than $600 billion, though Public Citizen's Peter Maybarduk, access to medicines director, argued there is 'no evidence' companies followed through on prior commitments.
- Trump indicated the remaining 10% of the pharmaceutical market will have 'no choice' but to join the program, while the administration continues promoting TrumpRx, which officials claim has saved consumers more than $700 million since February.
