Ghana Tomato Traders Among Dead in Burkina Faso Attack

Seven Ghanaian traders were killed and several wounded in an attack by al-Qaeda-linked militants as part of a surge in Islamist violence in northern Burkina Faso.

  • On Saturday, reports say at least 20 people were killed in Titao, northern Burkina Faso, including seven Ghanaians described as "burnt beyond recognition" who were tomato traders on a supply lorry targeted by jihadists.
  • The al‑Qaeda‑linked group JNIM said it was behind Saturday's attack, with Lt Col Abdoul Aziz Ouedraogo stating `Multiple attacks took place on Saturday in the north of the country. Our forces demonstrated valour and professionalism, inflicting a heavy defeat on the terrorists and neutralising several dozen of them`.
  • Witnesses said attackers split into three groups targeting the Titao military camp, telephone facilities, and looting and burning shops and supply trucks, while the tomato and onion truck drivers' association said attackers set the vehicle on fire after the driver tried to take cover.
  • As of Monday, Ghana's interior minister said he was engaged with Burkinabé authorities who planned on burying the dead and offered military assistance to create a safe passage to Ghana's mission in Ouagadougou, while road access remains blocked.
  • The attack is part of a spate of Islamist assaults over the past four days, including militants seizing Bilanga town and partially destroying Titao's military base, raising strategic concerns for the Burkinabé army.
