Typhoon Jangmi Expected to Bring Heavy Rain to Western, Eastern Japan
Airlines canceled more than 600 flights as the storm brought heavy rain, strong winds and evacuation warnings across the country.
On Tuesday, Typhoon Jangmi arrived in Okinawa, forcing evacuations and prompting the cancellation of more than 400 flights, primarily scheduled by All Nippon Airways.
The Japan Meteorological Agency reported the storm system is bringing severe rain and winds, with maximum instantaneous wind speeds reaching 162 kph as it approaches Japan.
Forecasting heavy precipitation, the agency expects 300 mm of rain to fall in Okinawa, Amami, and southern Kyushu by Tuesday, while EVA Airways has adjusted flight schedules.
Authorities urged elderly residents and those needing extra time to evacuate, while Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara announced the government established a disaster management liaison office.
The typhoon is set to shift course eastward toward Shikoku, the Kansai region, and the Kanto region, including Tokyo, with warning-level heavy rainfall expected through Wednesday.
