TMC’s Aroop Seeks Freeze on Party Bank Accounts Amid Leadership Battle; Fresh Blow to Mamata Camp
Biswas said rival factions could misuse the party’s funds and cheques, as the account dispute deepens after the TMC’s election defeat.
On Thursday, Trinamool Congress leader Aroop Biswas wrote to HDFC Bank seeking a freeze on party accounts, citing uncertainty over legitimate leadership amid internal turmoil and rival factions claiming organizational control.
The crisis follows the party's defeat in the 2026 Assembly elections, triggering a rebellion where at least 58 of 80 TMC MLAs broke ranks and 20 MPs sought to merge with the Nationalist Citizens Party.
Biswas, removed as treasurer by Subhasish Chakraborty on June 5, claimed he acts in his official capacity to safeguard Rs 675 crore in party funds from potential unauthorized misuse amid the dispute.
HDFC Bank received the letter on Wednesday, while Chakraborty, the newly appointed treasurer, dismissed the move and insisted he remains the only authorized official to manage the party's single account.
This dispute reflects the deepest crisis in the TMC's 28-year history, as rival factions increasingly battle for control over organisational assets and political legacy within the West Bengal Assembly.
