Tribute to 'kind' London teenager, 18, who died in Welsh river
A multi-agency search recovered his body after he entered the River Wye, and his college launched fundraising for funeral expenses.
Umar Dumbuya, an 18-year-old from London, died after entering the River Wye in Glasbury, Powys, on June 30 during a Duke of Edinburgh's Award expedition.
Emergency services were called at 6:30 PM after reports the teenager had entered the water and could not be located, prompting a large-scale search involving Dyfed-Powys Police, Mountain Rescue, and the National Police Air Service.
Leyton Sixth Form College expressed "profound sadness" over the loss, while a DofE spokesperson confirmed they are "liaising closely with the young person's college and relevant authorities."
Dumbuya's family paid tribute to the "loving boy," describing themselves as "heartbroken by the loss of our son" and requesting privacy as they grieve.
Enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the death are continuing as Leyton Sixth Form College has launched a Gofundme page to support the family with funeral expenses.
