Trial Set to Begin for Man Accused in Massive Gold Heist at Toronto's Pearson Airport
Police say 6,600 gold bars worth more than $20 million were stolen after a fraudulent airway bill was used to move the shipment.
On Monday, Parmpal Sidhu's trial begins in Brampton, Ont., for his alleged role in the 2023 theft of gold from Pearson International Airport. Sidhu faces charges of theft over $5,000 and conspiracy to commit an indictable offence.
Police allege that on April 17, 2023, thieves stole 6,600 gold bars weighing more than 400 kilograms from an Air Canada cargo facility at Pearson, valued at more than $20 million and ordered from a Zurich, Switzerland refinery.
Investigators claim a suspect presented a fraudulent airway bill to warehouse employees, who loaded the shipment onto a five-tonne truck. Another man involved in the heist was sentenced this spring to four years in prison.
Last month, the Crown withdrew charges against Ali Raza, a jeweller, and Amit Jalota, who had been accused of knowingly receiving stolen gold. This narrowed the prosecution's scope as Sidhu's trial proceeded.
Arsalan Chaudhary, arrested earlier this year returning from Dubai, pleaded guilty to theft over $5,000 and must pay $22 million in restitution over 40 years. Archit Grover is expected to face trial later this fall.
