Treasury Screens 885M Payments, Stops $99M Headed to Deceased Recipients

Treasury said its new verification process has screened 885 million payments worth $2.7 trillion and expects more stops this year.

  • On Tuesday, the Treasury Department, led by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, flagged more than 4,900 federal payments worth roughly $99 million intended for deceased recipients. This intervention occurred under a new verification process following President Donald Trump's executive order to reduce government waste.
  • Congress provided Treasury with permanent access to the Social Security Administration's full death master file earlier this year, enabling these checks. Officials prioritize stopping improper disbursements before funds are released, as recovering money after it leaves government proves difficult.
  • Using the Do Not Pay program, Treasury has screened over 885 million payments totaling about $2.7 trillion. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services separately deferred more than $1 billion in payments to California and Minnesota for additional review.
  • Bessent aims to stop up to $350 million in improper payments before year's end as part of the vice president's task force on eliminating waste. CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz said his agency is finished chasing stolen funds after they have already left the government.
  • The Government Accountability Office estimates improper payments reach up to $500 billion annually, dwarfing Treasury's $99 million catch. Romina Boccia, director of budget and entitlement policy at the Cato Institute, noted only about 4% of eligible programs currently utilize the Do Not Pay verification system.
