Update: Trains Derail in Same Location Two Years Apart
Approximately 22 of 95 crude oil cars derailed with minor leaks but no injuries or evacuations, Dodge County authorities said as investigations continue.
- On Aug. 15, 2025, the Dodge County Sheriff's Office confirmed a Canadian Pacific Train carrying crude oil derailed just after 2 p.m. west of Reeseville, with some oil leaking.
- It is the second large derailment in Dodge County in just over two years, following a July 4, 2023 incident that derailed 29 cars carrying grain and potash.
- The train had 95 cars, of which 22 derailed, and the CLR Fire Department, Sheriff's Office and Canadian Pacific Railroad formed a unified command.
- Despite the derailment, no injuries were reported and no evacuation was required as one residence left voluntarily while authorities asked the public to avoid the area.
- Dodge County Sheriff Dale Schmidt said cleanup should be done by Saturday morning as federal responders work to repair the track to reopen the line Friday evening.
