Trail Blazers: Meet the Trail Researcher Who Helped Turn Waste Into a Critical Mineral
The process turned germanium waste into a valuable mineral and later helped support Trail Operations’ critical-mineral expansion plans.
Local chemical engineer Dr. Daniel Boateng helped develop the germanium recovery process at what was then Cominco, a contribution recently highlighted after reader Walter Siemens contacted the Trail Times following a July 7 announcement about Teck Trail's critical minerals expansion.
Working at the Technical Research Centre, Boateng was motivated by the frustration of watching germanium discharged as waste while facing the technical challenge of retrieving something present at less than 100 parts per million.
Born in Ghana and trained at the University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, Boateng joined Cominco in 1980 and became inventor of 25 patents, recognizing germanium's applications in optical fibres enabling high-speed internet and as a catalyst for clear plastic production.
During his tenure, the highest price Boateng obtained for contained germanium was approximately USD $2,700 per kilogram; today's market value nears USD $8,600, with strategic importance accelerating significantly since about 2024.
More than four decades after Boateng's research began, germanium has become central to Trail Operations' future; Teck Resources, the Canada Growth Fund and Natural Resources Critical Minerals Accelerator signed a $400 million agreement on July 7, with plans for investment up to $850 million supporting near-zero-waste production.
