Tragic end in search for missing 16yo camper
Emergency services rescued the 17-year-old and found the 16-year-old's body in challenging terrain after a three-day hiking trip separation, police said.
- On Thursday, emergency services found the body of a 16-year-old boy in a creek in Blue Gum Forest, Blue Mountains National Park, at about 1pm.
- Two boys aged 16 and 17 travelled to Leura train station on Tuesday before walking to Mount Hay, Blue Mountains to begin a three-day camping trip.
- Becoming separated about 5.45pm on Wednesday, the older boy activated his personal locator beacon, and rescuers winched him to safety from the Acacia Flat campground during a land-and-air search.
- A post-mortem examination will be conducted in the coming days to determine how the boy died, and police say a report will be prepared for the coroner.
- The Grose Valley Wilderness campground is described for `intrepid campers` on a `challenging, very steep` track, and the body was found about 15km from the start near Blue Gum Forest.
