UNIFIL says one peacekeeper killed, two wounded in shelling in south Lebanon

UNIFIL said two other peacekeepers were wounded and an investigation is underway after shelling struck the base, amid rising violence in south Lebanon.

  • The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon reported Thursday that a Serbian peacekeeper was killed and two others wounded when shelling hit their base in southern Lebanon on Wednesday night.
  • Hours before the attack, the U.S. announced a conditional ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon on Wednesday; Defence Minister Israel Katz stated Thursday that military operations would continue in south Lebanon.
  • Hezbollah, which rejects direct negotiations, has not commented on the truce deal, while Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned that any attack on Beirut would trigger a "full-scale resumption" of war.
  • UNIFIL stressed that deliberate attacks on peacekeepers may amount to war crimes, as Israeli strikes since March 2 have killed more than 3,500 people and displaced over one million in Lebanon.
  • The truce deal reportedly involves creating "pilot zones" where the Lebanese army will "take exclusive control of the territory to the exclusion of all non-state actors.
