JERUSALEM DISTRICT, ISRAEL, AUG 1 – A gate left open allowed a Persian tiger to attack and kill Uriel Nuri, the zoo's head caretaker, prompting an immediate closure and investigation, officials said.
- In Jerusalem, zoo officials on Friday confirmed Uriel Nuri, a 26-year-old zookeeper, was killed by a Persian tiger during a behind-the-scenes tour.
- According to zoo officials, one gate was left open while Nuri prepared an enrichment activity during a behind-the-scenes tour, enabling the tiger to escape.
- The incident occurred around 9:55 a.m., and United Hatzalah medic David Safedg said they were called around 10:00 a.m., while Hadassah Medical Center reported, `After prolonged resuscitation efforts, the team was forced to declare him dead`.
- Following the tragedy, the Biblical Zoo remains closed until Sunday, and Israel Police units from Jerusalem’s Moriah precinct have launched an investigation, the Gush Etzion Regional Council said, `Baruch Dayan HaEmet`.
- Notably, in recent years, Dr Ariel Lifshitz said he couldn’t recall such an incident happening here, highlighting the rarity of deadly animal attacks at the zoo.
