Tragedy as Celtic fan dies during Champions League playoff match
Police said a 65-year-old fan was taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary and died after becoming unwell during Celtic's 3-0 win over LASK.
On Wednesday, August 19, 2026, a 65-year-old man died after falling ill during Celtic's Champions League qualifier against LASK at Celtic Park, Glasgow. Police Scotland stated there are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.
The incident occurred during Celtic's 3-0 victory over the Austrian champions, LASK, in the first leg of their qualifier. Benjamin Nygren and Camilo Duran scored to put Celtic in full control of the tie.
Emergency services were alerted around 9.05pm on Wednesday after receiving a report of the man taking unwell within the stadium. He was conveyed to Glasgow Royal Infirmary, where he died a short time later.
The Parkhead side announced the death in a statement released Thursday evening following the incident. Celtic has made a strong start to the season, winning all four matches across all fronts.
Celtic travels to Austria next Tuesday for the return leg of the qualifier. Manager Martin O'Neill recently returned to the touchline after recovering from a "small procedure" that required hospitalization.
