Traditionalist Catholic group defends bishop consecrations after Vatican declares schism

The Vatican said all SSPX priests and adherents are now in schism after the group ordained four bishops without papal approval.

  • On Thursday, the Vatican's Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith decreed that SSPX bishops, priests, and Catholics who "adhere formally" to the group are excommunicated and in schism with the wider Catholic Church.
  • Defying Pope Leo XIV, the SSPX consecrated four new bishops without papal mandate at its seminary in Écône, Switzerland, on Wednesday, committing a grave violation of church law.
  • The Church considers unauthorized ordination of bishops so serious that it causes those involved to be "out of communion" with the wider Church; the Vatican declared this exceptionally harsh punishment within 24 hours of the ceremony.
  • SSPX Superior General Davide Pagliarani rejected the decree Friday, labeling the sanctions "unjust and invalid" while asserting the society's actions were an "extraordinary initiative for the salvation of souls."
  • Ethics expert Rev. Robert Gahl noted the Vatican's swift response alerted the SSPX's 733 priests they were participating in a schism, exposing the group's false claim to be "more Catholic than the pope.
