Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu eyes new markets, smaller trade delegations
CANADA, AUG 3 – Trade Minister Sidhu targets new markets and encourages businesses to use Canada’s 15 free trade agreements providing access to over 1.5 billion consumers, officials said.
- Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu emphasized he aims to sign deals in South America, Southeast Asia, Africa, and persuade businesses to use existing trade agreements.
- A decades-old forum to resolve irritants, the Joint Economic and Trade Commission, is being revived as Ottawa seeks to mend trade ties with China after last year's collapse over U.K. restrictions.
- Export Development Canada reports Ottawa has 15 free trade agreements covering 51 countries, offering Canadian exporters access to over 1.5 billion consumers and 99 per cent of traded items with the U.K.
- Sidhu said he will bring smaller delegations of companies focused on specific sectors, while Global Affairs Canada is assessing how spending cuts will impact the trade branch and trade commissioners.
- With an eye on targeted sectors, Sidhu plans to visit Brazil soon to revive Mercosur trade talks, while LeBlanc indicated Canada may pursue sector-specific agreements over coming weeks.
