Vast Majority of States Need to Do More to Reduce Plastic Pollution, Report Says
UNITED STATES, JUL 15 – Only California received an excellent rating while most states fail to significantly reduce plastic pollution despite 9% recycling rates, the Ocean Conservancy report said.
- This week’s United States of Plastic Report from Ocean Conservancy finds most states need improvement to reduce, reuse and recycle plastics.
- On July 15, 2025, 11 million metric tons of plastic enter oceans annually, equivalent to a trash truck dumping a full load every minute, according to the report.
- In state ratings, Maine, Oregon, New York and Washington were rated good, Colorado, Illinois, Iowa and Minnesota received fair ratings, and Mississippi ranked last, report said.
- The report noted that no states require reusables at dine-in restaurants or microfiber filtration, the report said, adding `This highlights the significant challenges that are limiting our recycling system — from lack of upstream design standards to insufficient infrastructure`.
- Future estimates indicate plastic pollution could exceed the weight of all fish in the ocean by 2050, and supporting reuse systems through legislative intervention and industry innovation is necessary for a sustainable future.
