Toyota Halts Lexus EV Plans Under Broader Investment Review
Toyota will keep developing batteries and gigacasting while it reassesses next-generation EV plans as U.S. sales weaken, sources said.
On Friday, Toyota Motor Corp. decided to halt development of the next-generation Lexus LF-ZC electric sedan, ending plans for the luxury model first unveiled in 2023.
The decision reflects a slump in global electric vehicle demand, particularly in the United States, after the administration of President Donald Trump abolished federal tax credits for EV buyers.
Engineers designed the vehicle with gigacasting technology to reduce costs and advanced prismatic batteries for extended range, featuring the "Arene OS" software platform powering a personalized Intelligent Cockpit experience.
Shifting focus to larger SUVs and other segments, the automaker said, "We will respond swiftly to changes in the times and customer needs while striving to build cars that exceed customer expectations."
Despite this setback, Toyota maintains its multi-pathway strategy incorporating hybrid, plug-in, and fuel cell technologies alongside electric vehicles while continuing to develop all-solid-state batteries for its broader Japanese and global lineup.
With the LF-ZC, the Toyota premium brand Lexus was to catch up on the gap in electric mobility. However, given the difficult US market, the Japanese are now withdrawing.
