Toxic Gas Kills 4 Students at Vrindavan Gurukul, Rescue Attempt Turns Fatal

Authorities suspect toxic gas in the tank as a magisterial inquiry examines safety compliance at the gurukulam.

  • Four students died and one was hospitalized on Wednesday after inhaling toxic gas while cleaning an underground water tank at a Sanskrit Gurukulam in Vrindavan, Uttar Pradesh, officials reported.
  • While cleaning the underground tank, approximately 12 feet deep, one student collapsed from suspected toxic gas; four others entered to rescue him, causing all five to lose consciousness.
  • The Sanskrit Gurukulam is run by Ashish Kumar Sharma, a resident of Madhya Pradesh, and houses around 100 students on campus; SSP Shlok Kumar confirmed the four deceased victims were aged between 17 and 20 years.
  • District Magistrate Chandra Prakash Singh ordered a magisterial inquiry into safety and regulatory compliance, while the Chief Minister directed officials to ensure proper treatment for the surviving student, Rudra.
  • "Other gurukulams in the area would be audited again, and the buildings would be checked to prevent recurrence of such incidents," Singh said; the SSP will also examine CCTV footage from the site.
