Lake Visitors Urged to Watch for Algae and Swimmer’s Itch Risks
Authorities warn the bloom may still produce toxins underwater, and two domestic animal poisoning cases have been reported since early July.
- Northern Health confirmed a blue-green algae bloom at Takysie Lake, approximately 40 kilometres south of Burns Lake. The agency issued a "Do Not Consume" order on Thursday as water sample testing continues.
- Characterized by "no visible scum, just water discoloration," the bloom remains underwater and difficult to detect. Since July, the province reported two suspect cases of Cyanobacteria poisoning in domestic animals at Takysie Lake.
- Takysie Lake Resort co-owners Danielle and Stephen Irvine-Andrews are trucking in drinking water from Burns Lake. "We're just following all of recommendations and passing on the information they give us," Danielle said.
- Hazardous to humans and animals, Cyanobacteria produce "potent liver toxins, neurotoxins, as well as skin irritants." Residents should avoid drinking, swimming, or wading in waters where blooms are present.
- Residents can monitor potential blooms on the Algae Watch Observation Map to stay informed about changing environmental conditions, as the Ministry of Environment and Parks states predicting bloom duration is difficult.
