Town Crier Statue Gets Second Chance at New Life in Greater Victoria
Kenny Podmore will seek a public site for the 10.5-foot bronze monument after the Greater Victoria Harbour Authority gave him permission.
The Greater Victoria Harbour Authority has granted longtime Sidney town crier Kenny Podmore permission to find a new home for the bronze Town Crier statue, which has remained in storage for roughly a decade.
Sculpted by Armando Barbon in 2009, the statue depicts famed town crier Tommy Mayne and stood at Ogden Point for years, greeting cruise ship passengers before being removed from the waterfront.
The 10.5-foot monument weighs roughly 750 pounds and sits on a 3.5-foot base, featuring a plaque that honors 12 Vancouver Island criers, including Podmore himself.
Podmore hopes the statue remains in Greater Victoria, stating "One word describes it, and that is welcome," though he noted that relocation costs must be covered externally.
Now, the longtime town crier is scouting for a local business, golf course, or community space to host the monument, emphasizing the effort preserves "the history of town crying" rather than seeking personal recognition.
