Rio De Janeiro: Tourists Stranded on Hilltop After Police Raid on Favela
Police said 3 people were arrested and no one was injured after gunfire stranded more than 200 tourists on the hill for about two hours.
- On Monday, more than 200 tourists were stranded atop Morro Dois Irmaos, or Two Brothers Hill, in Rio de Janeiro after a gunfight erupted between police and drug gangs in the nearby Vidigal favela.
- Officers from the Public Prosecutor's Office of Bahia and Rio's Civil Police conducted the operation to arrest alleged members of Comando Vermelho, one of Brazil's largest criminal groups suspected of hiding in Vidigal.
- Tourist Danielly Nobre described hearing gunshots as guides asked the group to sit down, while a police helicopter signaled for calm overhead during the controlled standoff.
- The operation resulted in three arrests and no reported injuries, allowing the stranded group to descend the 1,750-foot hilltop after receiving the green light from authorities.
- Overlooking Ipanema Beach and Leblon, the popular 533-meter hilltop attracts thousands of visitors weekly, contributing to Rio's record 2.1 million international tourists in 2025.
