Toughness a quality of U.S. Open winners at Shinnecock Hills
Past champions prevailed with clutch short-game shots and steady nerve as Shinnecock Hills punished mistakes on a short, bunker-lined par 3.
The U.S. Open is underway at Shinnecock Hills, where the challenging par-3 11th hole features a small green 40 feet above the tee.
Historically, Shinnecock Hills has demanded precision; only Retief Goosen and Phil Mickelson finished under par in 2004, while Brooks Koepka won in 2018 with a score of 1 over.
Regarding course challenges, Golfer Adam Scott noted, "A 150-yard hole scares us," while Golfer Rory McIlroy highlighted that European golfers play mostly in the United States.
International players have claimed the first two majors via McIlroy and Golfer Aaron Rai, and the current tournament features a 156-man field, including 68 players who qualified through 36-hole events.
Defining the mindset of a champion, Koepka said players need "a lot of grit and doesn't give up," a quality Golfer Mark O'Meara noted in Golfer Raymond Floyd, whom he described as the most intimidating opponent.
