- Tory MSP Douglas Lumsden claimed the Aberdeen South seat for the Scottish Conservatives on Thursday, winning 14,308 votes and taking the constituency from the SNP for the first time in more than 50 years.
- By-Elections were triggered after SNP MPs Stephen Flynn and Stephen Gethins resigned from the House of Commons to join the Scottish Government at Holyrood. Flynn, now Scotland's economy secretary, called the result a "tough night."
- Shortly after the Aberdeen result, SNP candidate Lara Bird held the Arbroath and Broughty Ferry seat with 9,802 votes. Bird secured a majority of more than 5,000 votes over the Conservatives.
- Campaigning on the industry's future, Lumsden stated constituents sent a message that "the destruction of the oil and gas industry must stop now." He defeated SNP candidate Richard Thomson by more than 6,000 votes.
- The SNP faces a challenging period, recently rocked by a scandal surrounding former chief executive Peter Murrell, who admitted to embezzling more than £400,000 of party funds. Murrell is due to be sentenced next week.
