Top UN official accuses Hamas of Gaza aid obstruction
Ramiz Alakbarov said Hamas’s actions endangered aid workers and disrupted relief operations as armed men entered a food site and a WFP warehouse.
- On Monday, UN Deputy Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Ramiz Alakbarov accused Hamas of obstructing humanitarian operations, warning the group's interference makes relief efforts 'increasingly dangerous' for aid workers.
- Armed men linked to Hamas allegedly forced their way into a Jabalia food distribution point on Saturday, reportedly assaulting two World Food Programme truck drivers and entering a warehouse, per a United Nations statement.
- Alakbarov stated these incidents are 'not isolated,' warning they 'reflect an increasingly dangerous pattern of intimidation, violence and obstruction, including smuggling attempts, targeting and abusing humanitarian operations' affecting Gaza civilians.
- An official from the Hamas-run interior ministry rejected the accusations as unfounded, while COGAT, the Israeli defence body, slammed the group for allegedly 'cynically exploiting the humanitarian space' intended for Gaza residents.
- Israeli forces have expanded their presence across more than 60% of Gaza territory in recent months, though Hamas continues to exert control over the remaining areas amid ongoing tensions.
