Top boss vows 'no sitting still' as rugby bids to conquer US
World Rugby says it is building momentum for the 2031 tournament as US rugby faces financial strain and a shrinking professional league.
- World Rugby Chair Brett Robinson told AFP the sport "can't sit still" to grow, aiming to conquer the "challenge" of the United States by staging the 2031 Rugby World Cup.
- In New Zealand, All Blacks great Michael Jones told AFP last week that union is losing the battle for "hearts and minds" to rival code rugby league.
- Evaluating 27 potential host cities for 2031, World Rugby plans to whittle the list down to 12 to 14; South Africa and New Zealand will clash in Baltimore in September to build fan connections.
- Major League Rugby is down to six teams, causing serious doubts about rugby's health in the United States, which also faces hosting hurdles for the football World Cup this June-July.
- Robinson is also looking toward the '33 women's tournament in North America, which he says is "going from strength to strength." Before that, Australia hosts the men's Rugby World Cup next year.
