- In January, the University of Pennsylvania Museum and Egyptian archaeologists announced the discovery of a 3,600-year-old, seven-meter underground burial chamber of an unidentified pharaoh at the ancient necropolis of Anubis Mountain near Abydos, marking the second such discovery this year.
- The tomb dates back to the Second Intermediate Period , a chaotic era when Egypt was fragmented into as many as four rival kingdoms, including the Abydos Dynasty and the Hyksos of the Nile Delta, bridging the Middle and New Kingdom eras.
- The burial chamber, located about 10 km from the Nile River and 300 miles south of Cairo, was found bare and plundered, though originally contained hieroglyphic texts and painted scenes of Isis and Nephthys at the entrance, according to Josef Wegner.
- Josef Wegner, curator of the Penn Museum's Egyptian section and a leader of the excavation, described the political history of the era as a fascinating 'warring states' period that ultimately led to Egypt's New Kingdom.
- Wegner's team previously discovered the tomb of Abydos Dynasty ruler Seneb-Kay in 2014, and the architecture of this new tomb suggests it may be the largest and earliest of the Abydos Dynasty group, possibly belonging to kings like Senaiib or Paentjeni whose tombs remain undiscovered, with excavation work continuing through 2025.
