Toll attendant killed after pickup crashes through Daytona Beach Shores booth, Volusia County Sheriff’s Office says
Investigators say the driver was detained and tested for impairment after the truck hit the booth at about 40 mph, killing longtime worker Tammy Joe Baker.
On Monday, a pickup truck struck a toll booth at the Dunlawton Avenue beach access ramp in Daytona Beach Shores, killing 62-year-old toll attendant Tammie Joe Baker, according to the Volusia Sheriff's Office.
Investigators said driver Deanna Harrell was traveling at least 40 mph when she struck the booth, and the truck continued onto the beach and into the ocean before becoming stuck in the sand.
Sheriff Mike Chitwood said Harrell is in custody under Florida's Baker Act, noting he could smell alcohol in the vehicle during the investigation.
Witnesses described the impact as sounding like an explosion, while Chitwood called the crash 'senseless,' noting that Baker was a longtime county employee loved by many.
Due to the ongoing investigation, the Dunlawton beach access ramp remains closed until further notice, according to the Volusia Sheriff's Office.
