Today in Spain: A Roundup of the Latest News on Friday
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni met incoming Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar in Rome on Thursday, marking one of Magyar's first high-profile international engagements ahead of his formal installation on Saturday.
Meloni previously endorsed outgoing Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, even appearing in campaign videos, but has now shifted to establishing relations with Magyar following his election victory earlier this month.
Magyar described the meeting as "successful and forward-looking," noting that Italy and Hungary share similar positions on irregular migration and strengthening EU competitiveness.
During the Rome talks, Magyar invited Meloni to visit Hungary in the near future, while the Italian government stated the conversation "confirmed the solidity of relations between Italy and Hungary."
The Trieste port project holds strategic importance for landlocked Hungary, while Magyar has vowed to make the country a more reliable NATO ally and EU member, distancing himself from Orbán's ties with Moscow.
