  • Madeline May, a 24-year-old social media creator, encourages hosting gatherings to build community after hosting about a dozen large events with friends and at least five smaller gatherings with family members last year.
  • Richard Slatcher, a social psychology professor at the University of Georgia, says providing a setting for connection matters more than decor, while research by Julianne Holt-Lunstad shows social connection improves health and longevity.
  • Oregon-Based chef Josh McFadden told The Associated Press that grazing boards and pre-prepared meals simplify hosting. "It becomes a mobile meal," McFadden said, "and it also creates conversation."
  • Katie, 26, who lives in New Hampshire, recommends "bring your own" gatherings to reduce costs, while guests show consideration by cleaning up and arriving on time.
  • Guests hold responsibility in making events fulfilling; passive attendance prevents connection. "If you're passively being an attendee, you are not going to feel connected," Holt-Lunstad said.
