Nigeria: Govt, Ethiopia Sign Prisoner Transfer Agreement for Jailed Nigerians

The agreement follows years of diplomatic efforts and a presidential order to bring home Nigerians held in Ethiopian custody, officials said.

  • Nigeria signed an agreement with Ethiopia to repatriate over 100 Nigerian prisoners, with Minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu and Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Lateef Fagbemi finalizing the pact in Addis Ababa on Wednesday.
  • Following President Bola Tinubu's order to immediately repatriate Nigerian nationals serving sentences abroad, the delegation departed for Addis Ababa on Tuesday, where Ethiopian officials received the group to facilitate the transfer process.
  • In 2023, the Senate investigated the incarceration of 250 Nigerians in Ethiopia after public outrage; reports describe poor conditions including overcrowded facilities, inadequate food, and limited medical care for inmates.
  • Four Nigerian prisoners died while awaiting final ratification, as negotiations faced significant delays since Last October due to Ethiopian government sluggishness, Mrs Odumegwu-Ojukwu noted in a statement.
  • Determined to bring home the living, Nigeria remains focused on citizen welfare following years of diplomatic efforts, with Odumegwu-Ojukwu stating: "We cannot afford to lose any more precious lives.
