The 18-year-old suspect killed seven people, including five children, in a shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and a connected residence, police said.
- At about 2:20 p.m. on Feb. 10, police were alerted to an active shooter at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, and officers arrived within minutes as fire alarms rang and a witness shouted the suspect was upstairs.
- RCMP named the suspect on Feb. 11, 2026 as 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar, a resident of Tumbler Ridge; investigators said he was 'hunting' and his mother and brother were also victims.
- Police later identified the school victims as Abel Mwansa, Kylie Smith, Zoey Benoit, Ticaria Lampert, age 12, Ezekiel Schofield, age 13, and Shannda Aviugana-Durand, age 39, while investigators seized four firearms—two from the family home and two from the school.
- Residents were ordered to shelter in place as officials sent an emergency alert around 3:15 p.m., which the RCMP cancelled at 6:45 p.m. saying no suspects remain while they investigate a possible second suspect.
- Prime Minister Mark Carney and party leaders visited the community memorial, setting flowers at the growing site while BC RCMP launched an online evidence portal.
