Longtime Captain and Defender Tim Ream Announces Retirement From US Men's National Team

On Tuesday, defender Tim Ream, 38, announced his retirement from the U.S. Men's National Team in his hometown of St. Louis before the USMNT's friendly against Chile at Energizer Stadium.
Over a 16-year career, Ream earned 86 caps, including 33 as captain, after debuting in 2010 and competing in two World Cups, notably captaining the squad on home soil in 2026.
Before joining MLS side Charlotte FC in 2024, Ream spent nine seasons with Fulham, appearing in 312 matches and helping the Cottagers achieve promotion to the Premier League on three separate occasions.
"It wasn't a difficult decision," Ream said regarding his retirement after captaining the home World Cup, citing age as the primary factor in stepping away from international play.
Young talent, including 17-year-old Cavan Sullivan, ensures the U.S. team's future remains bright, as Ream compared this emerging group to when stars like Tyler Adams and Weston McKinnie first joined the national team.
