TikTok to continue operating in Canada, subject to safety conditions
TikTok will implement new security measures, enhanced protections for minors, and appoint an independent monitor to protect Canadian data and jobs, the government said.
- On Monday, Canadian Industry Minister Mélanie Joly announced Canada will allow TikTok Technology Canada to continue operating after a fresh national security review.
- A federal court set aside that shutdown in January, prompting a new security review, after Ottawa ordered TikTok's Canadian operations to wind down in November 2024, according to the government.
- The agreement requires TikTok to install 'security gateways' and 'privacy-enhancing technologies', strengthen protections for minors, and appoint an independent third-party monitor, enforced under the Investment Canada Act.
- The move preserves Canadian jobs by ensuring TikTok Canada maintains a physical presence and commits to invest in Canada's cultural sector, while TikTok said it can resume paused local investments and its Toronto office never closed.
- The move follows wider scrutiny of TikTok's Chinese ownership as Canada and others worry ByteDance faces Chinese laws compelling intelligence aid; it aligns with U.S. asset restructuring and EU privacy trends.
