Tibetan Group Asks Trump to Seek Release of Panchen Lama During Talks with Xi
The group said 29 rights organizations want Beijing to release prisoners of conscience and end transnational repression.
- On Wednesday, The International Campaign for Tibet urged President Donald Trump to press Chinese President Xi Jinping on human rights during their upcoming Washington meeting, demanding Beijing address its "human rights record" regarding Tibet.
- The ICT and 29 other organizations issued a joint letter citing systemic crimes since Xi took power in 2012, noting The Tibetan Policy Act of 2002 and Resolve Tibet Act of 2024 require peaceful dialogue without "preconditions."
- ICT President Tencho Gyatso called for three "urgent" steps: resuming dialogue with the Dalai Lama, releasing the 11th Panchen Lama, Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, and repealing the "Ethnic Unity and Progress Law" threatening Tibetan identity.
- These demands precede President Xi's scheduled visit to Washington on September 24, as advocates specifically seek release of the Panchen Lama, disappeared by Chinese authorities over 31 years ago.
- The coalition also urged an end to transnational "repression" and assimilation policies, claiming Chinese authorities target Uyghurs and other communities, systematically violating domestic and international legal obligations through atrocity crimes.
