Thunderstorms, damaging waves and fire risks: Multiple weather warnings in place across SA

  • From Monday afternoon, the South African Weather Service warned of severe thunderstorms and a yellow Level 2 warning for southern Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Free State, Limpopo, North West, plus a Level 1 coastal alert from Mazeppa Bay to Port Edward.
  • Forecasters say strengthening winds up to 50 kilometres an hour with heat are increasing risk as a heatwave persists until Thursday in parts of Eastern Cape and until Friday in Northern Cape, Free State, and southern North West.
  • Severe thunderstorms may produce localised flooding of local roads, low-lying areas and bridges, large amounts of small hail, excessive lightning, and SAWS flagged a very high UVB Sunburn Index, advising residents to take precautions.
  • Fire authorities said the Country Fire Service and the state's 13,500 volunteer firefighters are on high alert, urging communities to 'be ready' and enact bushfire plans or leave early.
  • Total fire bans cover nine districts with extreme danger ratings, while SAWS's colour‑coded warning system guides advisories across South Africa's nine provinces.
