Thunder Bay mill to end production of newsprint
Thunder Bay Pulp and Paper will cease newsprint due to a 40% demand drop since 2022 impacting 150 jobs while shifting focus to renewable energy and softwood kraft production.
- On Thursday morning, Thunder Bay Pulp and Paper announced it is discontinuing newsprint operations, impacting 150 workers and filing notices with the provincial labour ministry this quarter.
- Facing rising costs and failing repositioning efforts, Thunder Bay Pulp and Paper cited an 18% decline in North American newsprint demand in 2025 as a key factor.
- The firm plans to shutter the paper machine in a condition allowing future conversion and continue operating as a single-line Softwood Kraft mill generating renewable energy for the Ontario electricity grid.
- The company said it will work with local unions and federal and provincial governments to provide employment transition supports for affected employees and seek help refining investment plans for the Softwood Kraft mill.
- Regionally, the move comes amid recent mill closures including the Ignace sawmill and Interfor's Ear Falls shutdown; U.S. tariffs and flat market pressures have been cited, and Atlas Holdings acquired the plant in 2023.
