Brown University Students Sue, Claiming School Failed to Keep Campus Safe
The students say Brown ignored repeated warnings about the gunman and failed to add basic security before the attack that killed two and injured nine.
- On Thursday, three anonymous Brown University students filed lawsuits in Rhode Island Superior Court, alleging the Ivy League school committed negligence by failing to implement "reasonable and appropriate security measures" before the Dec. 13, 2025, campus shooting.
- Claudio Neves Valente, a 48-year-old former student, opened fire in the Barus and Holley building after repeatedly pacing the area; the lawsuits claim Brown ignored reports from custodian Derek Lisi about Valente "casing" the site.
- The suits argue Brown failed "to screen, question, deter, or restrict" access, noting the building had "only" two exterior cameras. The shooting killed students Ella Cook and MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, while injuring nine others, including the three plaintiffs.
- Brian E. Clark, Brown's vice president for news and strategic campus communications, stated the university is reviewing the complaints and remains "committed to the safety and security of our community.
