Three Royal Navy members who died in helicopter crash in Devon named
The Ministry of Defence said the Merlin Mk4 crashed during a training exercise and left the aircraft completely destroyed.
- On Wednesday, a Merlin Mk4 helicopter crashed during a training exercise at Sourton Down, Devon, killing three Royal Navy personnel: Lieutenant Lily-Mae Fisher, Lieutenant Commander Chris Gayson, and Petty Officer Owen Green.
- The incident occurred just before 4am, leaving the aircraft completely destroyed, and the Ministry of Defence confirmed the fatalities following the crash near Okehampton.
- Gayson, 42, served with 846 Naval Air Squadron, while Green, 24, was a member of 845 Naval Air Squadron, both dedicated members of the Armed Forces.
- Defence Secretary John Healey described the trio as "dedicated and highly valued members of their squadrons who embodied the best of our Armed Forces," while families issued personal tributes.
- Gayson joined the Royal Navy in 2008 and became an "utmost professional" instructor at RAF Shawbury; the Royal Navy confirmed an investigation into the crash's cause is underway.
