Three inmates were executed on same day in US for first time since 2010

The executions capped a year of rising capital punishment, with 21 carried out nationwide and nearly a dozen more scheduled, the Death Penalty Information Center said.

  • On Thursday, Oklahoma executed Carlos Cuesta-Rodriguez by lethal injection at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary in McAlester for the 2003 killing of his common-law wife, Olimpia Fisher.
  • This execution was one of three scheduled across the U.S. on Thursday, marking the first time in nearly 16 years that three inmates were executed on the same day.
  • During his July clemency hearing, Cuesta-Rodriguez expressed remorse for the 2003 killing, telling the Oklahoma Pardon and Parole Board he did not deserve mercy but sought to apologize to Fisher's family.
  • Separately, Tennessee executed Anthony Darrell Hines on Thursday for the 1985 murder of Catherine Jean Jenkins, after the Tennessee Supreme Court rejected his legal challenge regarding the execution team's qualifications.
  • Alabama was also scheduled to execute Jeremy Williams on Thursday for the 2021 murder of five-year-old Kamarie Holland, completing the rare triple execution day.
