Three in Four Websites Use Manipulative Design Against Their Own Users, New Research Finds
Around 75.7% of subscription websites and apps use at least one manipulative design tactic, with nearly 67% using multiple tactics at the same time.
In September 2025, Amazon agreed to a $2.5 billion settlement with the FTC over dark patterns in its Prime subscription enrollment and cancellation processes, including $1.5 billion in consumer refunds.
Enforcement against these manipulative designs is progressing faster than many legal teams expected.
Common manipulative tactics include pre-checked consent boxes, uneven accept or decline buttons, fake countdown timers, and making cancellation more complex than sign-up.
