Three horses en route to Equestrian Canada event killed in B.C. highway crash
The surviving horse was taken for veterinary treatment, and RCMP issued the driver a $109 ticket for failing to keep right.
On Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2026, a trailer crash on Highway 1 east of Revelstoke killed three horses traveling to the National Dressage and Para Dressage Championships in Langley.
The 73-year-old driver from Langdon, Alberta, lost control of her vehicle while towing four horses at approximately 8:45 a.m., about 40 kilometres east of Revelstoke.
One horse survived and was transported for immediate veterinary care; Mackenzie Abbott, a dressage trainer from Headingley, Manitoba, identified deceased horses Fearless and Rosaria, saying "We have suffered an unimaginable loss."
Authorities issued the driver a $109 ticket for failing to keep to the right of the highway; Equestrian Canada and Thunderbird Show Park announced the crash Wednesday and are providing mental health support to participants.
Athletes commonly hire commercial drivers to transport horses across Canada to national events; the 84-entry championship continues at Thunderbird Show Park as the equestrian community grieves the loss.
