Smartwatch Led Rescuers to Fatal Plane Crash in Montana Woods
GALLATIN COUNTY, MONTANA, JUL 21 – Search teams used location data from a victim's smartwatch to find the crash site in dense forest, confirming all three occupants died in the Piper Cherokee plane crash, officials said.
- On Friday, July 18, 2025, the Gallatin County Sheriff's Office reported three people died when a small plane crashed south of West Yellowstone, Montana.
- On Thursday, July 17, 2025, Federal Aviation Administration records show the Piper PA-28 single-engine plane departed West Yellowstone Airport just before midnight.
- Using the last known smartwatch location, search teams found the wreckage just south of West Yellowstone, after which ground crews navigated dense timber near South Plateau Road.
- Sheriff Dan Springer extended his `deepest condolences` to the Conover and Robey families, thanking agencies for their search and recovery efforts.
