Three dead, cargo ship catches fire in drone attacks on Russia's Rostov region

The drone strike damaged a Russian tanker linked to the Kremlin's shadow fleet, killing two crew members and injuring three, while an oil spill was prevented, officials said.

  • On Dec 18, Ukrainian drones struck a vessel moored at the port of Rostov-on-Don, igniting a fire that Rostov-on-Don Mayor Alexander Skryabin said emergency crews are extinguishing.
  • The strike follows a series of Ukrainian operations targeting Russian oil infrastructure and Russia's 'shadow fleet'; Sea Baby naval drones were linked to tanker strikes on Nov. 28 and Dec. 10.
  • Built in 1969 and converted in 2004, OSINT group Exilenova+ reported the vessel likely was the tanker Valeriy Gorchakov, linked to Russia's shadow fleet and ports Mariupol and Berdyansk.
  • By morning, Rostov Oblast Governor Yuri Slyusar said two crew members were killed, three wounded, the fire was extinguished by 5:21 a.m., and an oil leak was prevented.
  • The Kyiv Independent reported it could not verify claims about the strike or vessel type, Ukraine's military has not commented, and Russian officials offered differing accounts.
